Myrrh: The Oil of Mother Earth

Did you know Myrrh essential oil is the oil of Mother Earth? This oil nurtures the soul’s relationship with its maternal mother and with the earth. Myrrh also supports people who have a breakdown of their peaceful connection with the mother-child bond. When this bond has been broken apart, the soul may loose its childlike ability to trust. Feelings of trust are replaced with feelings of fear and a belief that the world is unsafe. Myrrh can help bridge the gap created and heal the disturbance.

Because healthy attachment is critical to our sense of safety in the world around us and those in it, Myrrh can support the parent-child bond in adoption and fostering, or support an adult in releasing childhood trauma that may impact their current relationships or ability to form trusting bonds with others. Whether it’s adoption, birth trauma, malnourishment, experiences of being abandoned or other childhood issues, Myrrh helps the soul restore feelings of trust and assists individuals in letting go of fear. Myrrh helps the soul feel the love and nurturing presence of “Mother”. Just as a baby needs its nutrient-rich colostrum found in a mother’s milk as a means of protection and to provide them with the right nourishment right from the start of life, Myrrh oil inoculates individuals from the harmful and adverse effects of the world. Like the warmth of a mother’s love for her child, Myrrh helps individuals feel safe and secure.

Myrrh, like Frankincense, has a high content of sesquiterpenes, a class of compounds that have a direct effect on the pituitary, hypothalamus, and amygdala, which are the seat of our emotions. Its warm and woody aroma is purifying, restorative, revitalising, and uplifting.

Myrrh is a very spiritual oil and has been used in religious ceremonies and rituals for over 5,000 years. Myrrh opens the heart chakra and can relieve stress and relax the body. Place it on your heart to release this patterning of holding onto fear. Myrrh releases fears, difficult experiences as it relates to us or the world. It asks us to be more accepting, trusting and non-judgmental of ourselves. When we can love and trust ourselves more, we don’t attract situations that are as painful and we learn to integrate our physical with our spiritual being.

Through re-establishing a healthy connection to earth and to one’s own mother, Myrrh supports us and rekindles trust within the soul. As we learn to live again in trust, confidence in the goodness of life returns and the soul feels more safe and at home on earth.
